On 22nd October, 2013, Mr. Shigenobu Kobayashi, the Charge d’Affaires at Embassy of Japan in Malawi signed a grant contract with Ms. Heather Campbell, Country Director of Concern Universal. The grant amounting to USD99, 996 (about K 33 million) under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects will support the construction of 13 boreholes in TA Ganya in Ntcheu District.

Communities in the TA Ganya drink water from unprotected shallow wells or streams which are also a source of water for their animals. In addition, the area does not have many water sources due to its topography. As a result women and children have to walk close to 2.5km to a water source. The grant signed will facilitate construction of 13 boreholes in order to increase access to safe and potable water for approximately 23 000 people.

After the completion of the project, it is expected that there will be improved access to safe and potable water but also the occurrence of water-borne diseases which are prevalent in the area will reduce. Women and girls will walk shorter distances to access water. Women will have more time to participate in other development activities and children will also have time to focus on their education. The occasion was graced by Mr. Sandram Maweru, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Water Development and Irrigation. This project is the Japan-Ireland cooperation project and the event was also witnessed by Her Excellency Elizabeth Higgins, Ambassador of Ireland to Malawi.
